The Merseyside BME Steering Group is committed to encouraging recruitment and supporting retention of trainees from a black and minority ethnic background.

Who we are

The Steering Group brings together The University of Chester, Edge Hill University, Liverpool John Moores University, Liverpool Hope University, The Merseyside and Cheshire GTP Consortium and representatives of Merseyside community groups with school-based input from Archbishop Blanch CoE High School.

Our overall target

Our overall target is to support the creation of a teacher workforce that fully reflects the diversity of the general population such as to:

  • promote cultural diversity
  • help combat racism
  • provide inspirational role models

Working with people considering entry into teaching

It is part of our remit as individual providers of initial teacher training to assist you with your application and whilst you are on course by:

  • providing information about routes into and funding for initial teacher training
  • offering advice and guidance about initial teacher training and also in relation to application and interview
  • ensuring that, once recruited, you are supported appropriately through to qualification and entry into teaching

Raising awareness and aspirations

The members of the Merseyside Steering Group are also working in collaboration to:

  • engage with local community groups
  • raise awareness and aspirations in relation to teaching as a career
